  18. -----Utilities for the AICPA

  20. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants asked PsL
  21. recently to put together a MegaDisk set of utilities for DOS and another
  22. for Windows for the AICPA to send to its members.
  23.  
  24. Although long-time readers will recognize the following programs as
  25. having been recommended and offered in various sets by PsL in the past,
  26. we thought we would give newcomers a shot at them. The programs are also
  27. on the September PsL CD in the AICPA directory.

  29. --DOS Utilities:
  30.  
  31. [WarpDrv] is an improvement over ANSI.SYS.
  32. [BCMove] is a file moving utility.
  33. [CopyDsk] is an enhanced disk copying utility.
  34. [Kopy] is a better file copier than the DOS COPY command.
  35. [ZDir] is a colorful sorted directory lister.
  36. [VIEW] is a tiny file viewing utility.
  37. [DLT2] is an enhanced file deletion utility.
  38. [FDForm] is a powerful disk formatting utility.
  39. [Edit] is a small, fast, full-screen text editor.
  40. [Fgrep] is a very fast text search utility.
  41. [CED] is a DOS command line editor, command recall, and DOS macro utility.
  42. [LCD] makes it easeir to change directories.

  44. The next two were our picks for 1992's Best New Utilities:
  45. [PocketD] adds over 120 functions to DOS in a small package.
  46. [MegaBack] is a fast, easy-to-use hard disk backup utility with many
  47.   sophisticated features.

  49. Last but certainly not least are
  50. [PKZIP204], a popular utility for compressing files and
  51. Integrity Master [INTEGMAS], a virus protection program.

  53. --Windows 3 Utilities:
  54.  
  55. [ChPaper] lets you browse through and change your wallpaper on command
  56.   or at specified intervals.
  57. [FreeMem] displays free conventional and expanded memory.
  58. [HotSpot] lets you instantly start or disable the Windows 3.1 screen saver.
  59. File Find [FILEFND] will find files anywhere on your hard drive or
  60.   network volume.
  61. [IcnMstr] is a powerful icon editor.
  62. [Launch] is a convenient desktop program launcher.
  63. [TrshMan] is a Mac-like trashcan for drag-and-drop deletion of files.
  64. [WinClok] is a multi-featured desktop alarm clock.
  65. Free Disk Space [WFDS] monitors and displays free disk space remaining
  66.   on all (or specified) hard drives.
  67. [WinPost] lets you have multiple on-screen "post-it" type notes which
  68.   can easily be hidden, saved and recalled.
  69. [WINProt] is a virus scanning program.
  70. [TypSmart] completes words you are typing based on your past typing.
  71. Byzans Task Manager [BYZ_TM] is a powerful replacement for the
  72.   Windows 3.1 Task Manager.
  73. [Sysfon] lets you change the system font that Windows uses for window titles
  74.   and menus.

  77. -----Goodbye to 5.25" Disks?

  79. Computer Retail Week reports: The disk drive war is over. Most software
  80. publishers see little reason to include 5.25-inch disks. Not one game on
  81. our April hits list [has 5.25-inch disks].
  82.  
  83. Some PsL customers have urged PsL to abandon low-density disks and have
  84. an all-MegaDisk library. It has been almost 10 years since new computers
  85. were equipped with 360k 5.25" disks. PsL recently lowered the price of
  86. 1.44MB 3.5" drives to $49.95.
  87.  
  88. There would seem to be little reason to continue with 360k disks, yet we
  89. continue to get calls regularly from people who have 8088's with 360k
  90. drives. For people who just want to keep mailing lists or do home
  91. accounting or word processing, these systems still perform adequately.
  92. And the people using them still need programs for them, even if the
  93. latest video games have left them behind.

  95. We also hear from a lot of schools and other institutions who have been
  96. given old computers by businesses and who want educational programs and
  97. simple games for them. Then there are people who have newer machines
  98. with 1.2MB 5.25" drives, but no 3.5" drives.

  100. When the first 3.5" drives came out, we predicted that 5.25" drives
  101. would disappear in a couple of years. We were obviously way off in that
  102. prediction and now we hesitate to predict that they will ever disappear.

  105. -----First PsL CD Sells Out Quickly
  106.  
  107. With only word of mouth advertising for our August CDROM, we did not
  108. expect much in the way of subscriptions and sales, yet they sold out in
  109. two weeks.
  110.  
  111. Callers have been consistently excited about the concept and we
  112. appreciate all the comments, support, and advice we have received,
  113. particularly from sysops around the world.
  114.  
  115. A typical response comes from Stephen Matthews:  "You've outdone
  116. yourselves again! This is one bill I will ENJOY paying every month."
  117.  
  118. We promised in advance that the first issue would have 300+ programs.
  119. Instead, it had well over 500. This issue has over 700 programs.
  120.  
  121. If you are not getting the CD because you don't have a drive, check out
  122. the prices on the Mitusmi and Sydos drives on the front inside cover of
  123. this issue.

  125. If you just aren't sure about the CD, enter a subscription, get a copy
  126. and check it out. If you are not 200% satisfied, don't pay the invoice.
  127. Just send the CD back. We are confident that anyone who sees this CD
  128. will want to keep getting it every month.

  131. -----Together Again
  132.  
  133. Together is a pop-up program that lets you view PCX files whose names
  134. appear on the screen, such as in a text file describing a program.
  135.  
  136. On our first PsL Monthly CD (last month), we placed Together in a
  137. directory with several program screen shots so that you could see
  138. program screens while reading about the programs using the PSL_NEWS
  139. program on the CD.
  140.  
  141. Everything worked fine during testing, but not on the CD. Together tries
  142. to write to the default drive, which it could not do with the CD. As
  143. soon as we discovered this, we called the author who immediately fixed
  144. the problem and emailed it to us. Unfortunatley, it did not arrive in
  145. time for last month's CD, but it is on the September CD.

  147. Before installing Together!, you must edit the TOGETHER.INI file to
  148. match your hardware. The TOGETHER.DOC file tells you how. You may read
  149. that file by typing VIEW TOGETHER.DOC at the DOS prompt.

  154. --Software Innovative or Not?

  158. "According to the letter you sent me, my program Move It! was rejected for
  159. inclusion in your catalog because you "already have a lot of programs of
  160. the same type and do not feel it is a significant improvement.

  162. "This is absolute nonsense. There is no program [which] moves, removes,
  163. and copies directories with the ease and facility of Move It!.
  164.  
  165. "It is dismaying that the self-appointed curators of shareware are so
  166. absorbed with the financial end of the shareware business that they
  167. ignore innovation. But of course it's a major inconvenience to try out
  168. new programs, and there's all that fuss and bother of re-editing the
  169. catalog."

  173. I am sorry if my letter offended you. It is meant to provide helpful
  174. feedback. My own experience as a programmer is that the great majority of
  175. vendors provide no feedback at all, whether they accept your program or
  176. not.

  178. The letter goes on to say: "If you feel that your program IS better than
  179. all the others, a chart comparing the features... would be a good selling
  180. point for your potential customers as well as for PsL." Just saying that a
  181. program is "easier" does not really give us a basis for comparison, since
  182. every programmer (including me) thinks THEIR program is easier and better
  183. than all the others.
